On September 3rd 1658, Oliver Cromwell died, aged 59, apparently of complications from malaria. His son, Richard, took over, but could not govern with the strength his father had and resigned in May 1659. Thanks in large part to the work of George Monck, Member of Parliament and military man, Charles I’s eldest son returned to England in the same month.
1660 Restoration
Charles II issued a Declaration from his residence in Breda, in Holland, promising general amnesty – with exceptions.
With him, the bishops were restored too. Everything that Milton had worked for was gone.
In effect, everything that Milton had worked for politically was gone.
Present Turned; Past Denied
The new parliament – the so-called “Cavalier Parliament” – has been described as “more Royalist than the King”. The King had promised general pardon (he needed to, in order to be invited back), but, fully backed by Parliament, he made an exception for the people who had been directly responsible for his father’s death – including the dead. Milton, who had defended the regicide, was in danger.
Cromwell and others were already dead, they were dug up and hanged, beheaded and their heads staked for public view.
Milton under Attack
Milton’s works were banned by royal proclamation – in particular, of course Eikonoklastes, his defence of Charles I’s execution. Copies of his books were burned by the public hangman.
Milton himself took refuge with a friend in St. Bartholomew’s Close in the City; by September, he had found another house for himself quite nearby and must have thought he was safe, but some time in October, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. On 15thDecember, Parliament ordered his release – for a fine.
King’s brother reportedly (James Duke of York) said that Milton’s lost eyesight was God’s judgement. Milton retorted that the judgement on his father was worse as he was beheaded
Domestic Changes
By 1663, Milton was no longer of interest to the Government. He was a private citizen, blind, and widowed, living with his three daughters (Mary’s children), with whom apparently he did not get on very well. In February, he married for the third and last time: Elizabeth Minshull, aged 24 – nine years older than his oldest daughter. The marriage seems to have been very happy, though we’re told she was hard on his daughters.
In 1665, the Milton household moved briefly to a house outside London, to avoid the Plague.
Back in London, In 1667, he published the first edition of his long-intended poem: Paradise Lost.
Steps towards Paradise: “Adam Unparadiz’d”, an unwritten play
1640s Milton had been planning an epic for a long time, as we know, and had various ideas about its subject matter (cf. the EpitaphiumDamonis); some time in the 1640s, he began to think about the Fall as a subject, though his first idea was to write a play. The original title for this was “Adam Unparadiz’d”.
The first part of the poem that he finally wrote was Satan’s address to the Sun at the beginning of Book IV: as you’ll see, it is very like a dramatic soliloquy.

Paradise Lost: First Edition (1667)
The first edition of the poem had ten books, like the poem on the Roman Civil War by the Latin poet Lucan. The title page is interesting: we see Milton’s name, and the fact that it was “Licensed” (how that must have galled him!), but there’s something missing …
The first edition was issued by the publisher (without the publisher’s name) six times (with different title-pages each time). From the 4th issue onwards, it appeared with a note from the publisher and another note from Milton explaining “Why the poem rhymes not”. It was recognized from the start as something extraordinary – even by Milton’s political opponents.

In 1674, the second edition appeared, this time in 12 books, like Virgil’s The Aeneid – made by dividing Books VII and X in half (there are also a few very minor additions).

The Universe of the Poem
This sketch, from 1915, gives an idea of the physical world of the poem.
It begins at the bottom, with Satan, who has the weight of the whole piled on top of him. As we read, he moves his eyes, then his head, then his whole body as he explores, in his defiance, first Hell, then Chaos, and finally Eden and Paradise. In Book III, we shift to God’s perspective, as he watches Satan and foretells the end of it all. It is not until Book IV that we reach Paradise itself, and we see it through the eyes of Satan, who comes to destroy it.
The whole shape of Milton’s universe reinforces the potential and the vulnerability of the earth, poised between Heaven and Hell … also has a moral situation with hell at the bottom and heaven at the top

Why, This Is Hell …
Following good Classical precedent, Milton makes his poem “Hasten into the midst of things”, as he says, literally translating in medias res. After the introduction, we find ourselves in Hell, with Satan – a character many readers since at least the Romantic period have found strangely appealing.

This mighty poem takes its subject from the first three chapters of the Book of Genesis. The rather simple story told there is complicated and expanded by long traditions of Biblical commentary which had explained the snake as the devil, and identified him with Lucifer, the falling star in Isaiah 14:12-15; commentators had given the story a positive ending by following St. Paul’s idea that Christ is the “second Adam” (Romans 5:12 ff.), who has restored, for those who believe in him, the possibility of happiness that the first Adam lost.
The poem was probably composed when M. was in his middle fifties. It is

- the metre is the iambic pentameter, which means that there are (basically) 5 stressed beats to the line – though Milton varies the pattern greatly.

2) A Note on the Universe of Paradise Lost
Although the Copernican system of astronomy (in which the earth goes round the sun) was quite widely accepted by this time among intellectuals, and is actually discussed in the poem, Milton chooses to base his universe on the old, Ptolemaic system, in which the earth is in the centre, surrounded by turning “spheres”: the spheres of the moon, sun, planets (Mercury to Saturn), and “fixed stars” (ie. stars, not planets), a sphere of water, and the “primum mobile” – the largest sphere. (Milton also seems to imagine a sort of shell or covering round the whole thing.) At the top of the poem is Heaven; at the bottom is Hell; earth is in between. Adam and Eve live in Paradise, the most beautiful part of the Garden of Eden, on earth – the only part of the universe that grows and therefore is vulnerable to corruption …

- He asks the muses to sing about “man’s first disobedience” (1), the Forbidden Fruit, his exile from Eden, his eventual redemption through Jesus Christ, etc.
- shifts to a burning inferno; we’re in Hell with Satan…somewhere way out in the middle of nowhere… Milton calls Chaos.
- Satan is bewildered; just fallen from Heaven…not adjusted to his new surroundings. It’s hot, it’s a “darkness visible”
- He notices his first mate, Beelzebub.
- Satan addresses Beelzebub, saying he doesn’t look like the friend he knew in Heaven (apparently, we don’t know their names either in heaven either per Dr. Griffin).

- Satan says goal from now on is to be evil: “To do ought good never will be our task, / But ever to do ill our sole delight” (1.159-60). If God does something good, they will try to screw it up.
- Satan suggests that he and Beelzebub move to a nearby plain and think about how to war against God, deal with the horrors of their circumstances, and repair their losses.
- As Satan moves towards the plain, the narrator describes him: he is much bigger than any of the famous giants of classical mythology or the bible. He is so big, a sailor might mistake him for an island and attempt to moor his boat there.
- He moves off the lake and flies – these fallen angels still have their wings – to the plain, which is also burning. Beelzebub eventually follows him.
- Satan looks around and says it’s not so bad because he’d rather be as far from God as possible.
- He then suggests that his forces reassemble on the plain so they can figure out a plan of action.
- Satan goes to the shore of the burning lake to beckon the fallen angels; his shield is almost as big as the moon and his spear is much bigger than the biggest mast of a ship.
- The fallen angels are scattered on the lake like a whole bunch of leaves, or just like a whole bunch of reeds in the Red Sea.
- Satan addresses the fallen angels, and he can’t believe they’ve been vanquished.
- He tells them to rise up now, or remain fallen forever. They rise up very quickly, as if they’ve been caught napping while on duty (that’s Milton’s comparison not ours!).
- The angels assemble in squadrons, just like an organized army. There are a ton of them! The leaders of the squadrons assemble close to Satan, the “great commander.”
- These leaders will eventually become the various pagan deities described in the Old Testament (the first half of the Bible that deals with the times before Jesus) that the Israelites worshipped (sinfully) alongside God.
- The first to come is Moloch (392), who is covered in blood. He somehow deceived Solomon – an Old Testament king – to build a temple for him.
- Next comes Chemos (406); after the Israelites made it out of Egypt, they started spending a lot of time with non-Hebrew peoples and eventually started worshipping this guy.
- With Chemos and Moloch come Baalim and Ashtaroth (422). Both of these are general words to refer to types of male and female pagan deities found in the region that is now the modern-day middle east, especially Syria, Iraq, Israel, and Jordan.
- Astoreth (438) or Astarte, as the Phoenicians called her, also comes with the fallen angels. She was worshipped by Phoenician virgins and also by the Israelites in their promised land!
- Thammuz (446) comes next; he was supposedly wounded every year, which caused the river Adonis to become a purplish color because of his blood.
- Next comes Dagon (462), a Philistine sea-god whose upper half is man, the lower fish.
- After him comes Rimmnon (467), a deity worshipped in what is now modern-day Syria.
- Next come the bestial and beastly Egyptian gods with animal heads – Isis, Osiris, and Orus (478).
- The last to arrive is Belial (490); nobody ever built a temple for him, but he can be found everywhere. He loves vice for itself, and is associated with insolent debauchery.
- There were a lot of other fallen angels, but it would take forever to name them all, says our narrator. For example, there were also the Olympian gods that the Ancient Greeks worshipped.
- A lot of other devils come, and they all look unhappy, though they appear to have some hope left. They are glad to find that Satan is not in total despair.
- Satan rekindles their hope with a speech that sounds good but is really a bunch of rubbish (so says the narrator), and he demands that his flag be unfurled.
- When all the fallen angels see the flag (it shines like a meteor), the individual squadrons raise their flags, spears, and shields and roar with one loud voice.
- The soldiers start marching (silently) to the tune of some hellish pipes, and eventually assemble in front of Satan, waiting for his command.
- Satan stands like a tower over his army (the biggest ever assembled); he’s still got some of the old fire still left in him, even after falling a really long way (571).
- Satan tries three times to speak to his minions, but he keeps bursting into tears! Satan can cry? Since when?! (619)
- Finally he starts speaking, noting that they are brave soldiers and nobody could have foreseen that such an awesome army could ever be defeated.
- Don’t worry, he tells them, they will rise again, but they can’t fight God in the same way. They have to use “fraud or guile” this time.
- The rumor-mill says God intends to create another world, and Satan says they should devote their energies to messing with that world.
- Satan finishes, and his legions all draw their swords as a sign of approval.
- A group of fallen angels led by Mammon – the greedy, money-loving devil – head towards a volcano rich with “metallic ore.”
- They start digging in it and eventually unearth a bunch of gold.
- A second group works to separate the ore from the rock with the help of liquid fire – there’s a burning lake nearby just right for the purpose – while a third group pours the ore into a mould.
- Eventually, a huge edifice emerges; it looks like a huge temple and has sculptures adorning it, huge pillars, and even a golden roof. It is more magnificent than anything ever seen on earth.
- The fallen angels enter the building, now given the name Pandemonium, to have a council. It is swarming with angels, almost like a beehive.
- All of a sudden, the fallen angels, which a minute before were bigger than giants, now shrink to the size of little elves or dwarves (this is so that they can all fit inside Pandemonium). (779)
- The squadron leaders retain their giant size (they don’t shrink) and gather together for the great debate in Hell.
Book 2 Summary

- Book 2 opens with Satan sitting on his throne; he addresses his legions, saying that he still hopes to regain Heaven.
- He says that now they must debate about the most effective way to fight God;
- – all out war
- – something more subtle is better.
- Moloch (war) speaks first; he’s in favor of open war with God. They should just batter God’s throne with all they’ve got because things can’t be possibly get any worse.
- Belial (no war) – a really clever speaker – is up next. He’s not in favor of open war because Heaven is too well-fortified and will easily expel the foreign invaders.
- And besides, being an angel, even in Hell, is better than death; things could be worse. They could be burned alive by the fires of Hell, chained to the burning lake, etc.
- Actually, Belial is against any form of war because God will figure out their plans and defeat them. Who knows? Maybe God will relax his punishment if they just put up with it for a while.
- Mammon (no war, enjoy hell) is up next; he says it is impossible to defeat God and, even if He forgives everybody, they’ll have to be slaves and pay tribute to Him. Not worth it.
- They should just do what they want in Hell, because they’re free there. With a little hard work, they can make the best of their situation.
- There is applause after this speech; the fallen angels are afraid of another war, and would rather build an empire in Hell to rival Heaven’s.
- Beelzebub (take over earth) rises up; he says it’s a joke to think they can have their own empire in Hell. God will eventually exert his dominion over it too.
- There will be no peace, but they don’t necessarily have to assault Heaven. Rumor has it that God is building a new world. They should check it out.
- Maybe they can destroy mankind, or “Seduce them to our [the devil’s] party” (2.368).
- The fallen angels vote in favor of Beelzebub’s plan…supposedly. It sounds rigged.
- He resumes his speech and asks who is bold enough to try and find this new world?
- Nobody volunteers, and all the angels are afraid; this is a bold, important, and dangerous task.
- Satan stands up and addresses the council. He says Hell is a really strong prison and it’s hard to get out; if one gets out, then one has to deal with a dark place that has no being (“unessential Night”). It’s like stepping off the planet into something unknown.
- He says he wouldn’t be a good sovereign, though, if he were afraid of doing something. He’s the leader and should brave more dangers. He’ll look for the new world.
- He tells the angels to make Hell cozier while he’s away.
- The fallen angels greatly respect their leader; they treat him like a “God…equal to the highest in Heav’n” (2.479). He’s risking his own life for their sake after all.
- They shouldn’t get too excited; this prospect is kind of like a gleam of sunshine when it’s clearly going to rain.
- The highest-ranking angels emerge from Pandemonium with Satan, who is surrounded by a group of heavily-armed soldiers.
- Trumpets made of fake gold proclaim the result of the council; Hell resounds with cheering.
- The leaders each go their own way, to relax or chill out – to find “truce for [their] restless thoughts” – while they wait for Satan to return.
- Some angels tear up rocks and create a huge ruckus; some of them go off and sing songs. Still others go off in the hills to meditate on philosophical subjects. Some even have races!
- One group assembles into platoons and goes in search of an “easier habitation” – i.e., a nicer place to live. Each group travels along the banks of one of the four rivers of Hell (Styx, Acheron, Cocytus, Phlegeton).
- Beyond these is the river of forgetfulness, Lethe. And beyond that, the platoons discover that Hell is a frozen wasteland. Huh?
- That’s right, it’s snowing and there’s hail. Basically it’s like Antarctica. It’s so cold, though, it almost burns. “Cold performs the effect of Fire,” Milton says.
- Apparently the fallen angels will be forced to spend time in this part of Hell on a regular basis, frozen in ice; the change from fire to ice is brutal.
- Meanwhile, Satan makes his way towards the gates of Hell, which are very strong, and surrounded by fire. There are three of them (one brass, one iron, one “adamantine rock”).
- There are two figures on either side of the gate. The first is a female from the head to the waist, but below the waist, she’s a serpentine. Around her waist are little hell-hounds that constantly bark but sometimes retreat into her womb. Disgusting!
- The other is dark and black; he appears shapeless, and is very terrible (sorry, that’s all Milton gives us). He wears a fake crown on his head, and is introduced at line 666. Hmmm….
- Satan is not afraid; he addresses them, saying he’s going through that gate no matter what.
- The male asks him if he’s the rebel angel that started a huge war in Heaven. He (the shapeless figure) is in charge here, not Satan.
- Satan and this figure stare each other down (like two thunder clouds), almost as if they were about to duel. Each plans to kill the other with one stroke, but the female jumps between them.
- She asks Satan why he’s about to kill his….son! And she asks the other why he’s about kill his…father!
- Satan asks her what she’s talking about, and she tells him: during the planning of the revolt in Heaven, she (still unnamed) sprung forth from the left side of his head! The rebel angels named her Sin.
- Satan had a secret sexual relationship with his daughter Sin and impregnated her; she fell with the angels from Heaven, was given the key to Hell, and gave birth to Death (the shapeless guy).
- Death eventually raped (“embraces forcible and foul”) Sin (his mother), who gave birth to those hell hounds around her waist. They howl and gnaw out her insides.
- Satan tells Sin that he’s trying to free his angels and that he’s going in search of God’s newly-created world. He’ll let Sin and Death roam free there if he finds it.
- Sin says that God has forbidden her to open the gates. Why should she listen to God, though, since He’s exiled her? Besides, he’s not her real dad, Satan is.
- Sin opens the gates; a thunderous sound is heard, and flames and smoke burst out. Beyond is “a dark/ Illimitable Ocean without bound,/ Without dimension” (2.891-893).
- Satan observes this place – it’s called Chaos, and it is hot, cold, moist, and dry all at once. It’s really loud, louder than the sounds of war or the sound of the earth imploding.
- Satan takes flight; his journey takes him over a number of strange, hybrid substances; he has to walk-fly, crawl, swim, basically move in every which way. This is Chaos, after all.
- He hears some sounds and moves towards them, eventually coming to Chaos’ throne. He tells him (Chaos) that he’s trying to find the borders of Heaven and asks for directions.
- Chaos says he knows who he is; he heard the angels fall and saw the heavenly angels pursue them.
- He directs Satan towards earth, and Satan takes off like a pyramid of fire.
- Satan approaches Heaven, and he can see its light shining into the dark abyss. He also notices the universe (Milton calls it the “world”), hanging from Heaven by a golden chain.
- He moves towards it “full fraught with mischievous revenge.”
Sin and Death: Dr. Johnson Objects to the Allegory
Dr. Johnson, as we have seen, is not one to hold back in his criticism. He has many fine passages of praise for Paradise Lost, but he disliked the end of Book II:
Milton’s allegory of Sin and Death is undoubtedly faulty. Sin is indeed the mother of Death, and may be allowed to be the portress of hell; but when they stop the journey of Satan, a journey described as real, and when Death offers him battle, the allegory is broken. That Sin and Death should have shown the way to hell, might have been allowed; but they cannot facilitate the passage by building a bridge, because the difficulty of Satan’s passage is described as real and sensible [perceptible by the senses], and the bridge ought to be only figurative. The hell assigned to the rebellious spirits is described as not less local than the residence of man. It is placed in some distant part of space, separated from the regions of harmony and order by a chaotic waste and an unoccupied vacuity; but Sin and Death worked up a “mole of aggravated soil” cemented with asphaltus, a work too bulky for ideal [ie. unreal] architects.
Steven M. Fallon, in his article “Milton’s Sin and Death: the Ontology of Allegory in Paradise Lost” English Literary Renaissance 17.3 (1987), 329-50, argues that Johnson is right to find the episode inconsistent but wrong to think Milton was just making a mistake: in Fallon’s view, Milton made Sin and Death into allegorical figures in order to show that evil is in fact just an absence – something imaginary, like allegory.

Sin and Scylla
Milton’s character Sin derives in part from the Classical figure of Scylla, the monster in The Odyssey. But Scylla, like Sin, has a backstory, which Ovid tells in his Metamorphoses. This translation is taken (more or less) from the online translation by A.S. Kline

Glaucus, the fisher of the swollen Euboean waters, […] swimming with mighty strokes, across the Tyrrhenian Sea, […] came to the grassy hills and the halls of Circe, daughter of the Sun, filled with transformed beasts.
As soon as he saw her, and words of welcome had been exchanged, he said: ‘Goddess, I beg you, take pity on a god! You alone can help this love of mine, if I seem worthy of help. No one knows better than I, Titaness, what power herbs have, since I was transmuted by them. So that the cause of my passion is not unknown to you, I saw Scylla, on the Italian coast, opposite Messene’s walls. I am ashamed to tell of the prayers and promises, the blandishments I used, words that were scorned. If there is any power in charms, utter a charm from your sacred lips: or, if herbs are more potent, use the proven strength of active herbs. I trust you not to cure me, or heal me, of these wounds: my love cannot end: only let her feel this heat!”
No one has a nature more susceptible to such fires than Circe, whether the root of it is in herself, or whether Venus, offended by Sol1 her father’s tale-bearing, made her that way, so she replied: ‘You would do better to chase after someone whose wishes and purposes were yours, and who was captured by equal desire. Besides, you were worth courting (and certainly could be courted), and if you offer any hope, believe me you will be too. If you doubt it, and have no faith in your attractions, well, I, though I am a goddess, daughter of shining Sol, though I possess such powers of herbs and charms, I promise to be yours. Spurn the spurner, repay the admirer, and, in one act, be twice revenged!’
To such temptations as these Glaucus replied: ‘Sooner than my love will change, while Scylla remains, leaves will grow on the waters, and sea-weed will grow on the hills.’ The goddess was angered, and since she could not harm him (nor, loving him, wished to do so) she was furious with the girl, who was preferred to her. Offended at his rejection of her passion, she at once ground up noxious herbs with foul juices, and joined the spells of Hecate to their grinding. Wrapping herself in a dusky cloak, she made her way from the palace, through the crowd of fawning beasts, and sought out Rhegium, opposite Zancle’s cliffs, travelling over the seething tidal waters, as if she trod on solid ground, crossing dry-footed over the surface of the sea.
There was a little pool, curved in a smooth arc, dear to Scylla for its peacefulness. When the sun was strongest, at the zenith, and from its heights made shortest shadows, she retreated there from the heat of sky and sea. This, the goddess tainted in advance and contaminated with her monstrous poison. She sprinkled the liquid squeezed from harmful roots, and muttered a mysterious incantation, dark with strange words, thrice nine times, in magical utterance.
Scylla comes, wading waist deep into the pool, only to find the water around her groin erupt with yelping monsters. At first, not thinking them part of her own body, she retreats from their cruel muzzles, fears them, and pushes them away: but, what she flees from, she pulls along with her, and, seeking her thighs, her legs, her feet, in place of them finds jaws like Cerberus’s. She stands among raging dogs, and is encircled by beasts, below the surface, from which her truncated thighs and belly emerge.
Her lover Glaucus wept, and fled Circe’s embrace, she, who had made too hostile a use of her herbs’ powers. Scylla remained where she was, and, at the first opportunity, in her hatred of Circe, robbed Ulysses of his companions. Later she would have overwhelmed the Trojan ships, if she had not previously been transformed into a rock, whose stone is visible even now: a rock that sailors still avoid.

THE ARGUMENT
The Consultation begun, Satan debates whether another Battel be to be hazarded for the recovery of Heaven: some advise it, others dissuade: A third proposal is prefer’d, mention’d before by Satan, to search the truth of that Prophesy or Tradition in Heaven concerning another world, and another kind of creature equal or not much inferior to themselves, about this time to be created: Their doubt who shall be sent on this difficult search: Satan their chief undertakes alone the voyage, is honored and applauded. The Council thus ended, the rest betake them several ways and to several employments, as their inclinations lead them, to entertain the time till Satan return. He passes on his journey to Hell Gates, finds them shut, and who sat there to guard them, by whom at length they are op’nd, and discover to him the great Gulf between Hell and Heaven; with what difficulty he passes through, directed by Chaos, the Power of that place, to the sight of this new World which he sought.

To whom we hate. Let us not then pursue
By force impossible, by leave obtain’d [ 250 ]
Unacceptable, though in Heav’n, our state
Of splendid vassalage, but rather seek
Our own good from our selves, and from our own
Live to ourselves, though in this vast recess,
Free, and to none accountable, preferring [ 255 ]
Hard liberty before the easy yoke
Of servile Pomp. Our greatness will appear
Then most conspicuous, when great things of small,
Useful of hurtful, prosperous of adverse
We can create, and in what place so e’re [ 260 ]
Thrive under evil, and work ease out of pain
Through labour and endurance. This deep world
Of darkness do we dread? How oft amidst
Thick clouds and dark doth Heav’ns all-ruling Sire
Choose to reside, his Glory unobscur’d, [ 265 ]
And with the Majesty of darkness round
Covers his Throne; from whence deep thunders roar
Must’ring thir rage, and Heav’n resembles Hell?
As he our darkness, cannot we his Light
Imitate when we please? This Desert soil [ 270 ]
Wants not her hidden lustre, Gemms and Gold;
Nor want we skill or Art, from whence to raise
Magnificence; and what can Heav’n shew more?
Our torments also may in length of time
Become our Elements, these piercing Fires [ 275 ]
As soft as now severe, our temper chang’d
Into their temper; which must needs remove
The sensible of pain. All things invite
To peaceful Counsels, and the settl’d State
Of order, how in safety best we may [ 280 ]
Compose our present evils, with regard
Of what we are and were, dismissing quite
All thoughts of warr: ye have what I advise.
He scarce had finisht, when such murmur filld
Th’ Assembly, as when hollow Rocks retain [ 285 ]
The sound of blustring winds, which all night long
Had rous’d the Sea, now with hoarse cadence lull
Sea-faring men orewatcht, whose Bark by chance
Or Pinnace anchors in a craggy Bay
After the Tempest: Such applause was heard [ 290 ]
As Mammon ended, and his Sentence pleas’d,
Advising peace: for such another Field
They dreaded worse then Hell: so much the fear
Of Thunder and the Sword of Michael
Wrought still within them; and no less desire [ 295 ]
To found this nether Empire, which might rise
By pollicy, and long process of time,
In emulation opposite to Heav’n.
Which when Beelzebub perceiv’d, then whom,
Satan except, none higher sat, with grave [ 300 ]
Aspect he rose, and in his rising seem’d
A Pillar of State; deep on his Front engraven
Deliberation sat and public care;
And Princely counsel in his face yet shon,
Majestic though in ruin: sage he stood [ 305 ]
With Atlantean shoulders fit to bear
The weight of mightiest Monarchies; his look
Drew audience and attention still as Night
Or Summers Noon-tide air, while thus he spake.
Thrones and Imperial Powers, off-spring of heav’n [ 310 ]
Ethereal Vertues; or these Titles now
Must we renounce, and changing stile be call’d
Princes of Hell? for so the popular vote
Inclines, here to continue, and build up here
A growing Empire; doubtless; while we dream, [ 315 ]
And know not that the King of Heav’n hath doom’d
This place our dungeon, not our safe retreat
Beyond his Potent arm, to live exempt
From Heav’ns high jurisdiction, in new League
Banded against his Throne, but to remaine [ 320 ]
In strictest bondage, though thus far remov’d,
Under th’ inevitable curb, reserv’d
His captive multitude: For he, be sure
In heighth or depth, still first and last will Reign
Sole King, and of his Kingdom loose no part [ 325 ]
By our revolt, but over Hell extend
His Empire, and with Iron Scepter rule
Us here, as with his Golden those in Heav’n.
What sit we then projecting peace and Warr?
Warr hath determin’d us, and foild with loss [ 330 ]
Irreparable; tearms of peace yet none
Voutsaf’t or sought; for what peace will be giv’n
To us enslav’d, but custody severe,
And stripes, and arbitrary punishment
Inflicted? and what peace can we return, [ 335 ]
But to our power hostility and hate,
Untam’d reluctance, and revenge though slow,
Yet ever plotting how the Conqueror least
May reap his conquest, and may least rejoyce
In doing what we most in suffering feel? [ 340 ]
Nor will occasion want, nor shall we need
With dangerous expedition to invade
Heav’n, whose high walls fear no assault or Siege,
Or ambush from the Deep. What if we find
Some easier enterprize? There is a place [ 345 ]
(If ancient and prophetic fame in Heav’n
Err not) another World, the happy seat
Of some new Race call’d Man, about this time
To be created like to us, though less
In power and excellence, but favour’d more [ 350 ]
Of him who rules above; so was his will
Pronounc’d among the Gods, and by an Oath,
That shook Heav’ns whol circumference, confirm’d.
Thither let us bend all our thoughts, to learn
What creatures there inhabit, of what mould, [ 355 ]
Or substance, how endu’d, and what thir Power,
And where thir weakness, how attempted best,
By force or suttlety: Though Heav’n be shut,
And Heav’ns high Arbitrator sit secure
In his own strength, this place may lye expos’d [ 360 ]
The utmost border of his Kingdom, left
To their defence who hold it: here perhaps
Som advantagious act may be achiev’d
By sudden onset, either with Hell fire
To waste his whole Creation, or possess [ 365 ]
All as our own, and drive as we were driven,
The puny habitants, or if not drive,
Seduce them to our Party, that their God
May prove their foe, and with repenting hand
Abolish his own works. This would surpass [ 370 ]
Common revenge, and interrupt his joy
In our Confusion, and our Joy upraise
In his disturbance; when his darling Sons
Hurl’d headlong to partake with us, shall curse
Thir frail Original, and faded bliss, [ 375 ]
Faded so soon. Advise if this be worth
Attempting, or to sit in darkness here
Hatching vain Empires. Thus Beelzebub
Pleaded his devilish Counsel, first devis’d
By Satan, and in part propos’d: for whence, [ 380 ]
But from the Author of all ill could Spring
So deep a malice, to confound the race
Of mankind in one root, and Earth with Hell
To mingle and involve, done all to spite
The great Creatour? But thir spite still serves [ 385 ]
His glory to augment. The bold design
Pleas’d highly those infernal States, and joy
Sparkl’d in all thir eyes; with full assent
They vote: whereat his speech he thus renews.
Well have ye judg’d, well ended long debate, [ 390 ]
Synod of Gods, and like to what ye are,
Great things resolv’d; which from the lowest deep
Will once more lift us up, in spight of Fate,
Neerer our ancient Seat; perhaps in view
Of those bright confines, whence with neighbouring Arms [ 395 ]
And opportune excursion we may chance
Re-enter Heav’n; or else in some milde Zone
Dwell not unvisited of Heav’ns fair Light
Secure, and at the brightning Orient beam
Purge off this gloom; the soft delicious Air, [ 400 ]
To heal the scarr of these corrosive Fires
Shall breath her balme. But first whom shall we send
In search of this new world, whom shall we find
Sufficient? who shall tempt with wandring feet
The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss [ 405 ]
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight
Upborn with indefatigable wings
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile; what strength, what art can then [ 410 ]
Suffice, or what evasion bear him safe
Through the strict Senteries and Stations thick
Of Angels watching round? Here he had need
All circumspection, and we now no less
Choice in our suffrage; for on whom we send, [ 415 ]
The weight of all and our last hope relies.
This said, he sat; and expectation held
His look suspence, awaiting who appeer’d
To second, or oppose, or undertake
The perilous attempt; but all sat mute, [ 420 ]
Pondering the danger with deep thoughts; and each
In others count’nance read his own dismay
Astonisht: none among the choice and prime
Of those Heav’n-warring Champions could be found
So hardie as to proffer or accept [ 425 ]
Alone the dreadful voyage; till at last
Satan, whom now transcendent glory rais’d
Above his fellows, with Monarchal pride
Conscious of highest worth, unmov’d thus spake.
O Progeny of Heav’n, Empyreal Thrones, [ 430 ]
With reason hath deep silence and demurr
Seis’d us, though undismaid: long is the way
And hard, that out of Hell leads up to light;
Our prison strong, this huge convex of Fire,
Outrageous to devour, immures us round [ 435 ]
Ninefold, and gates of burning Adamant
Barr’d over us prohibit all egress.
These past, if any pass, the void profound
Of unessential Night receives him next
Wide gaping, and with utter loss of being [ 440 ]
Threatens him, plung’d in that abortive gulf.
If thence he scape into whatever world,
Or unknown Region, what remains him less
Then unknown dangers and as hard escape.
But I should ill become this Throne, O Peers, [ 445 ]
And this Imperial Sov’ranty, adorn’d
With splendor, arm’d with power, if aught propos’d
And judg’d of public moment, in the shape
Of difficulty or danger could deterr
Mee from attempting. Wherefore do I assume [ 450 ]
These Royalties, and not refuse to Reign,
Refusing to accept as great a share
Of hazard as of honour, due alike
To him who Reigns, and so much to him due
Of hazard more, as he above the rest [ 455 ]
High honourd sits? Go therefore mighty Powers,
Terror of Heav’n, though fall’n; intend at home,
While here shall be our home, what best may ease
The present misery, and render Hell
More tollerable; if there be cure or charm [ 460 ]
To respite or deceive, or slack the pain
Of this ill Mansion: intermit no watch
Against a wakeful Foe, while I abroad
Through all the Coasts of dark destruction seek
Deliverance for us all: this enterprize [ 465 ]
None shall partake with me. Thus saying rose
The Monarch, and prevented all reply,
Prudent, least from his resolution rais’d
Others among the chief might offer now
(Certain to be refus’d) what erst they fear’d; [ 470 ]
And so refus’d might in opinion stand
His Rivals, winning cheap the high repute
Which he through hazard huge must earn. But they
Dreaded not more th’ adventure then his voice
Forbidding; and at once with him they rose; [ 475 ]
Thir rising all at once was as the sound
Of Thunder heard remote. Towards him they bend
With awful reverence prone; and as a God
Extoll him equal to the highest in Heav’n:
Nor fail’d they to express how much they prais’d, [ 480 ]
That for the general safety he despis’d
His own: for neither do the Spirits damn’d
Loose all thir vertue; least bad men should boast
Thir specious deeds on earth, which glory excites,
Or clos ambition varnisht o’re with zeal. [ 485 ]
Thus they thir doubtful consultations dark
Ended rejoycing in thir matchless Chief:
As when from mountain tops the dusky clouds
Ascending, while the North wind sleeps, O’respread
Heav’ns chearful face, the lowring Element [ 490 ]
Scowls ore the dark’nd lantskip Snow, or showre;
If chance the radiant Sun with farewell sweet
Extend his ev’ning beam, the fields revive,
The birds thir notes renew, and bleating herds
Attest thir joy, that hill and valley rings. [ 495 ]
O shame to men! Devil with Devil damn’d
Firm concord holds, men onely disagree
Of Creatures rational, though under hope
Of heavenly Grace; and God proclaiming peace,
Yet live in hatred, enmity, and strife [ 500 ]
Among themselves, and levie cruel warres,
Wasting the Earth, each other to destroy:
As if (which might induce us to accord)
Man had not hellish foes anow besides,
That day and night for his destruction waite. [ 505 ]
The Stygian Counsel thus dissolv’d; and forth
In order came the grand infernal Peers:
Midst came thir mighty Paramount, and seemd
Alone th’ Antagonist of Heav’n, nor less
Than Hells dread Emperour with pomp Supream, [ 510 ]
And God-like imitated State; him round
A Globe of fierie Seraphim inclos’d
With bright imblazonrie, and horrent Arms.
Then of thir Session ended they bid cry
With Trumpets regal sound the great result: [ 515 ]
Toward the four winds four speedy Cherubim
Put to thir mouths the sounding Alchymie
By Haralds voice explain’d: the hollow Abyss
Heard farr and wide, and all the host of Hell
With deafning shout, return’d them loud acclaim. [ 520 ]
Thence more at ease thir minds and somwhat rais’d
By false presumptuous hope, the ranged powers
Disband, and wandring, each his several way
Pursues, as inclination or sad choice
Leads him perplext, where he may likeliest find [ 525 ]
Truce to his restless thoughts, and entertain
The irksom hours, till his great Chief return.
Part on the Plain, or in the Air sublime
Upon the wing, or in swift Race contend,
As at th’ Olympian Games or Pythian fields; [ 530 ]
Part curb thir fierie Steeds, or shun the Goal
With rapid wheels, or fronted Brigads form.
As when to warn proud Cities warr appears
Wag’d in the troubl’d Skie, and Armies rush
To Battel in the Clouds, before each Van [ 535 ]
Prick forth the Aerie Knights, and couch thir Spears
Till thickest Legions close; with feats of Arms
From either end of Heav’n the welkin burns.
Others with vast Typhœan rage more fell
Rend up both Rocks and Hills, and ride the Air [ 540 ]
In whirlwind; Hell scarce holds the wilde uproar.
As when Alcides from Oechalia Crown’d
With conquest, felt th’ envenom’d robe, and tore
Through pain up by the roots Thessalian Pines,
And Lichas from the top of Oeta threw [ 545 ]
Into th’ Euboic Sea. Others more milde,
Retreated in a silent valley, sing
With notes Angelical to many a Harp
Thir own Heroic deeds and hapless fall
By doom of Battel; and complain that Fate [ 550 ]
Free Vertue should enthrall to Force or Chance.
Thir Song was partial, but the harmony
(What could it less when Spirits immortal sing?)
Suspended Hell, and took with ravishment
The thronging audience. In discourse more sweet [ 555 ]
(For Eloquence the Soul, Song charms the Sense,)
Others apart sat on a Hill retir’d,
In thoughts more elevate, and reason’d high
Of Providence, Foreknowledge, Will and Fate,
Fixt Fate, free will, foreknowledg absolute, [ 560 ]
And found no end, in wandring mazes lost.
Of good and evil much they argu’d then,
Of happiness and final misery,
Passion and Apathie, and glory and shame,
Vain wisdom all, and false Philosophie: [ 565 ]
Yet with a pleasing sorcerie could charm
Pain for a while or anguish, and excite
Fallacious hope, or arm th’ obdured brest
With stubborn patience as with triple steel.
Another part in Squadrons and gross Bands, [ 570 ]
On bold adventure to discover wide
That dismal world, if any Clime perhaps
Might yield them easier habitation, bend
Four ways thir flying March, along the Banks
Of four infernal Rivers that disgorge [ 575 ]
Into the burning Lake thir baleful streams;
Abhorred Styx the flood of deadly hate,
Sad Acheron of sorrow, black and deep;
Cocytus, nam’d of lamentation loud
Heard on the ruful stream; fierce Phlegeton [ 580 ]
Whose waves of torrent fire inflame with rage.
Farr off from these a slow and silent stream,
Lethe the River of Oblivion roules
Her watrie Labyrinth, whereof who drinks,
Forthwith his former state and being forgets, [ 585 ]
Forgets both joy and grief, pleasure and pain.
Beyond this flood a frozen Continent
Lies dark and wilde, beat with perpetual storms
Of Whirlwind and dire Hail, which on firm land
Thaws not, but gathers heap, and ruin seems [ 590 ]
Of ancient pile; all else deep snow and ice,
A gulf profound as that Serbonian Bog
Betwixt Damiata and Mount Casius old,
Where Armies whole have sunk: the parching Air
Burns frore, and cold performs th’ effect of Fire. [ 595 ]
Thither by harpy-footed Furies hail’d,
At certain revolutions all the damn’d
Are brought: and feel by turns the bitter change
Of fierce extreams, extreams by change more fierce,
From Beds of raging Fire to starve in Ice [ 600 ]
Thir soft Ethereal warmth, and there to pine
Immovable, infixt, and frozen round,
Periods of time, thence hurried back to fire.
They ferry over this Lethean Sound
Both to and fro, thir sorrow to augment, [ 605 ]
And wish and struggle, as they pass, to reach
The tempting stream, with one small drop to loose
In sweet forgetfulness all pain and woe,
All in one moment, and so neer the brink;
But fate withstands, and to oppose th’ attempt [ 610 ]
Medusa with Gorgonian terror guards
The Ford, and of it self the water flies
All taste of living wight, as once it fled
The lip of Tantalus. Thus roving on
In confus’d march forlorn, th’ adventrous Bands [ 615 ]
With shuddring horror pale, and eyes agast
View’d first thir lamentable lot, and found
No rest: through many a dark and drearie Vaile
They pass’d, and many a Region dolorous,
O’er many a Frozen, many a fierie Alpe, [ 620 ]
Rocks, Caves, Lakes, Fens, Bogs, Dens, and shades of death,
A Universe of death, which God by curse
Created evil, for evil only good,
Where all life dies, death lives, and Nature breeds,
Perverse, all monstrous, all prodigious things, [ 625 ]
Abominable, inutterable, and worse
Then Fables yet have feign’d, or fear conceiv’d,
Gorgons and Hydra’s, and Chimera’s dire.
Mean while the Adversary of God and Man,
Satan with thoughts inflam’d of highest design, [ 630 ]
Puts on swift wings, and towards the Gates of Hell
Explores his solitary flight; som times
He scours the right hand coast, som times the left,
Now shaves with level wing the Deep, then soares
Up to the fiery Concave touring high. [ 635 ]
As when farr off at Sea a Fleet descri’d
Hangs in the Clouds, by Æquinoctial Winds
Close sailing from Bengala, or the Iles
Of Ternate and Tidore, whence Merchants bring
Thir spicie Drugs: they on the Trading Flood [ 640 ]
Through the wide Ethiopian to the Cape
Ply stemming nightly toward the Pole. So seem’d
Farr off the flying Fiend: at last appeer
Hell bounds high reaching to the horrid Roof,
And thrice threefold the Gates; three folds were Brass, [ 645 ]
Three Iron, three of Adamantine Rock,
Impenetrable, impal’d with circling fire,
Yet unconsum’d. Before the Gates there sat
On either side a formidable shape;
The one seem’d Woman to the waste, and fair, [ 650 ]
But ended foul in many a scaly fould
Voluminous and vast, a Serpent arm’d
With mortal sting: about her middle round
A cry of Hell Hounds never ceasing bark’d
With wide Cerberian mouths full loud, and rung [ 655 ]
A hideous Peal: yet, when they list, would creep,
If aught disturb’d thir noyse, into her woomb,
And kennel there, yet there still bark’d and howl’d
Within unseen. Farr less abhorrd than these
Vex’d Scylla bathing in the Sea that parts [ 660 ]
Calabria from the hoarse Trinacrian shore:
Nor uglier follow the Night-Hag, when call’d
In secret, riding through the Air she comes
Lur’d with the smell of infant blood, to dance
With Lapland Witches, while the labouring Moon [ 665 ]
Eclipses at thir charms. The other shape,
If shape it might be call’d that shape had none
Distinguishable in member, joynt, or limb,
Or substance might be call’d that shadow seem’d,
For each seem’d either; black it stood as Night, [ 670 ]
Fierce as ten Furies, terrible as Hell,
And shook a dreadful Dart; what seem’d his head
The likeness of a Kingly Crown had on.
Satan was now at hand, and from his seat
The Monster moving onward came as fast [ 675 ]
With horrid strides, Hell trembled as he strode.
Th’ undaunted Fiend what this might be admir’d,
Admir’d, not fear’d; God and his Son except,
Created thing naught valu’d he nor shun’d
And with disdainful look thus first began. [ 680 ]
Whence and what art thou, execrable shape,
That dar’st, though grim and terrible, advance
Thy miscreated Front athwart my way
To yonder Gates? through them I mean to pass,
That be assured, without leave askt of thee: [ 685 ]
Retire, or taste thy folly, and learn by proof,
Hell-born, not to contend with Spirits of Heav’n.
To whom the Goblin full of wrauth reply’d,
Art thou that Traitor Angel, art thou hee,
Who first broke peace in Heav’n and Faith, till then [ 690 ]
Unbrok’n, and in proud rebellious Arms
Drew after him the third part of Heav’ns Sons
Conjur’d against the highest, for which both Thou
And they outcast from God, are here condemn’d
To waste Eternal dayes in woe and pain? [ 695 ]
And reck’n’st thou thy self with Spirits of Heav’n,
Hell-doom’d, and breath’st defiance here and scorn
Where I reign King, and to enrage thee more,
Thy King and Lord? Back to thy punishment,
False fugitive, and to thy speed add wings, [ 700 ]
Least with a whip of Scorpions I pursue
Thy lingring, or with one stroke of this Dart
Strange horror seise thee, and pangs unfelt before.
So spake the grieslie terror, and in shape,
So speaking and so threatning, grew tenfold [ 705 ]
More dreadful and deform: on th’ other side
Incenst with indignation Satan stood
Unterrifi’d, and like a Comet burn’d,
That fires the length of Ophiucus huge
In th’ Artick Sky, and from his horrid hair [ 710 ]
Shakes Pestilence and Warr. Each at the Head
Level’d his deadly aime; thir fatall hands
No second stroke intend, and such a frown
Each cast at th’ other, as when two black Clouds
With Heav’ns Artillery fraught, come rattling on [ 715 ]
Over the Caspian, then stand front to front
Hov’ring a space, till Winds the signal blow
To join thir dark Encounter in mid air:
So frownd the mighty Combatants, that Hell
Grew darker at thir frown, so matcht they stood; [ 720 ]
For never but once more was either like
To meet so great a foe: and now great deeds
Had been achiev’d, whereof all Hell had rung,
Had not the Snakie Sorceress that sat
Fast by Hell Gate, and kept the fatal Key, [ 725 ]
Ris’n, and with hideous outcry rush’d between.
O Father, what intends thy hand, she cry’d,
Against thy only Son? What fury O Son,
Possesses thee to bend that mortal Dart
Against thy Fathers head? and know’st for whom; [ 730 ]
For him who sits above and laughs the while
At thee ordain’d his drudge, to execute
What e’re his wrath, which he calls Justice, bids,
His wrath which one day will destroy ye both.
She spake, and at her words the hellish Pest [ 735 ]
Forbore, then these to her Satan return’d:
So strange thy outcry, and thy words so strange
Thou interposest, that my sudden hand
Prevented spares to tell thee yet by deeds
What it intends; till first I know of thee, [ 740 ]
What thing thou art, thus double-form’d, and why
In this infernal Vaile first met thou call’st
Me Father, and that Fantasm call’st my Son?
I know thee not, nor ever saw till now
Sight more detestable then him and thee. [ 745 ]
T’ whom thus the Portress of Hell Gate reply’d;
Hast thou forgot me then, and do I seem
Now in thine eye so foul, once deemd so fair
In Heav’n, when at th’ Assembly, and in sight
Of all the Seraphim with thee combin’d [ 750 ]
In bold conspiracy against Heav’ns King,
All on a sudden miserable pain
Surprisd thee, dim thine eyes, and dizzie swumm
In darkness, while thy head flames thick and fast
Threw forth, till on the left side op’ning wide, [ 755 ]
Likest to thee in shape and count’nance bright,
Then shining Heav’nly fair, a Goddess arm’d
Out of thy head I sprung; amazement seis’d
All th’ Host of Heav’n back they recoild affraid
At first, and call’d me Sin, and for a Sign [ 760 ]
Portentous held me; but familiar grown,
I pleas’d, and with attractive graces won
The most averse, thee chiefly, who full oft
Thy self in me thy perfect image viewing
Becam’st enamour’d, and such joy thou took’st [ 765 ]
With me in secret, that my womb conceiv’d
A growing burden. Mean while Warr arose,
And fields were fought in Heav’n; wherein remaind
(For what could else) to our Almighty Foe
Cleer Victory, to our part loss and rout [ 770 ]
Through all the Empyrean: down they fell
Driv’n headlong from the Pitch of Heaven, down
Into this Deep, and in the general fall
I also; at which time this powerful Key
Into my hand was giv’n, with charge to keep [ 755 ]
These Gates for ever shut, which none can pass
Without my op’ning. Pensive here I sat
Alone, but long I sat not, till my womb
Pregnant by thee, and now excessive grown
Prodigious motion felt and rueful throes. [ 780 ]
At last this odious offspring whom thou seest
Thine own begotten, breaking violent way
Tore through my entrails, that with fear and pain
Distorted, all my nether shape thus grew
Transform’d: but he my inbred enemie [ 785 ]
Forth issu’d, brandishing his fatal Dart
Made to destroy: I fled, and cry’d out Death;
Hell trembl’d at the hideous Name, and sigh’d
From all her Caves, and back resounded Death.
I fled, but he pursu’d (though more, it seems, [ 790 ]
Inflam’d with lust then rage) and swifter far,
Mee overtook his mother all dismaid,
And in embraces forcible and foule
Ingendring with me, of that rape begot
These yelling Monsters that with ceasless cry [ 795 ]
Surround me, as thou sawst, hourly conceiv’d
And hourly born, with sorrow infinite
To me, for when they list into the womb

Thither full fraught with mischievous revenge,

Mulciber, aka Vulcan or Hephaestus, builds the fallen angels a palace, where they hold a council. For unexplained reasons (there seems to be no shortage of space in Hell), it’s too small for them all to fit in without shrinking, but the leaders and speakers remain full size.
Moloch thinks they should go on fighting.
Belial thinks they should stop.
Mammon agrees, on the grounds that Hell has just as much gold anyway.
Beelzebub proposes a 3rd course: someone should go and explore!

Freed from Hell, Satan flies through a region of formless potential called “Chaos”, after ancient Greek cosmogonies. Like them Paradise Lost makes Chaos both a place and a person, who allows Satan passage.
At last he sees the distant light of Heaven – and under it, “in bigness as a star”, the vulnerable new earth …

His words here ended; but his meek aspect

To mortal men, above which only shone

All Heaven, what this might mean, and whither tend,
Wondering; but soon th’ Almighty thus replied.
O thou in Heaven and Earth the only peace
Found out for mankind under wrath, O thou

Though last created, that for him I spare

All this dark globe the Fiend found as he passed,
And long he wandered, till at last a gleam
Of dawning light turned thither-ward in haste 500
His travelled steps: far distant he descries
Ascending by degrees magnificent
Up to the wall of Heaven a structure high;
At top whereof, but far more rich, appeared
The work as of a kingly palace-gate,
With frontispiece of diamond and gold
Embellished; thick with sparkling orient gems
The portal shone, inimitable on earth
By model, or by shading pencil, drawn.
These stairs were such as whereon Jacob saw 510
Angels ascending and descending, bands
Of guardians bright, when he from Esau fled
To Padan-Aram, in the field of Luz
Dreaming by night under the open sky
And waking cried, This is the gate of Heaven.
Each stair mysteriously was meant, nor stood
There always, but drawn up to Heaven sometimes
Viewless; and underneath a bright sea flowed
Of jasper, or of liquid pearl, whereon
Who after came from earth, failing arrived 520
Wafted by Angels, or flew o’er the lake
Rapt in a chariot drawn by fiery steeds.
The stairs were then let down, whether to dare
The Fiend by easy ascent, or aggravate
His sad exclusion from the doors of bliss:
Direct against which opened from beneath,
Just o’er the blissful seat of Paradise,
A passage down to the Earth, a passage wide,
Wider by far than that of after-times
Over mount Sion, and, though that were large, 530
Over the Promised Land to God so dear;
By which, to visit oft those happy tribes,
On high behests his angels to and fro
Passed frequent, and his eye with choice regard
From Paneas, the fount of Jordan’s flood,
To Beersaba, where the Holy Land
Borders on Egypt and the Arabian shore;
So wide the opening seemed, where bounds were set
To darkness, such as bound the ocean wave.
Satan from hence, now on the lower stair, 540
That scaled by steps of gold to Heaven-gate,
Looks down with wonder at the sudden view
Of all this world at once. As when a scout,
Through dark and desart ways with peril gone
All night; at last by break of cheerful dawn
Obtains the brow of some high-climbing hill,
Which to his eye discovers unaware
The goodly prospect of some foreign land
First seen, or some renowned metropolis
With glistering spires and pinnacles adorned, 550
Which now the rising sun gilds with his beams:
Such wonder seised, though after Heaven seen,
The Spirit malign, but much more envy seised,
At sight of all this world beheld so fair.
Round he surveys (and well might, where he stood
So high above the circling canopy
Of night’s extended shade,) from eastern point
Of Libra to the fleecy star that bears
Andromeda far off Atlantick seas
Beyond the horizon; then from pole to pole 560
He views in breadth, and without longer pause

His flight precipitant, and winds with ease

The more it seems excess, that led thee hither
From thy empyreal mansion thus alone,
To witness with thine eyes what some perhaps, 700
Contented with report, hear only in Heaven:
For wonderful indeed are all his works,
Pleasant to know, and worthiest to be all
Had in remembrance always with delight;
But what created mind can comprehend
Their number, or the wisdom infinite
That brought them forth, but hid their causes deep?

Still ending, still renewing, through mid Heaven,
With borrowed light her countenance triform 730
Hence fills and empties to enlighten the Earth,

That spot, to which I point, is Paradise,
Adam’s abode; those lofty shades, his bower.
Thy way thou canst not miss, me mine requires.
Thus said, he turned; and Satan, bowing low,
As to superiour Spirits is wont in Heaven,
Where honour due and reverence none neglects,
Took leave, and toward the coast of earth beneath,
Down from the ecliptick, sped with hoped success, 740
Throws his steep flight in many an aery wheel;
Nor staid, till on Niphates’ top he lights.
God Justifies his Ways: Book III
God the Father’s speeches in Book III have always been the least popular part of the poem. Alexander Pope, in the 18th century, summed them up:
God the Father turns a school-divine
-that is, a pedantic theologian.
Why did M make God talk? Remember what The Lady says in Comus: “I hate when Vice can bolt her arguments,/ And Virgue has no tongue …” Satan cannot have the last word.
But how convincing is God’s argument?
77 – the suggestion is that God (the subject of the sentence) is in all tenses
all singular diety religions have a problem – evil

De Doctrina Christiana – On Christian Doctrine
“Foreknowledge had no influence on their fault”: Boethius’s Solution
At the heart of God’s speech is the apparent paradox: if God knows Adam and Eve will fall, have they the power not to do so?
Milton’s formula, that God foreknows what they will freely do, owes something to the famous discussion by the 5th century AD philosopher Boethius. He argues that God exists in an eternal present: this means that temporal sequence does not really exist for God – He sees everything simultaneously – but it does for us. This means that we experience events as sequential, one following the next, whereas God does not. That’s why, to us but not to God, God’s knowledge comes before our action.
